Hello! This week on Ask a Teacher, we answer a question from Humera in Pakistan.
大家好!在本周的《名师答疑》节目中,我们要回答来自巴基斯坦的胡默拉提出的一个问题。
Humera writes,
胡默拉写道,
Amazing way of teaching.
令人惊叹的教学方式。
I would like to know the difference between alright (one word) and all right (two words).
我想知道alright(一个词)和all right(两个单词)之间的区别。
Thanks.
谢谢。
Dear Humera,
亲爱的胡默拉,
Thank you for writing to us.
感谢你给我们写信。
This set of words is interesting because it shows a possible change in the English language.
这组单词很有趣,因为它显示出英语语言中可能发生的变化。
The two separate words "all right" and the single word "alright" both describe something that is fairly good or acceptable.
分开的两个单词“all right”和单独一个单词“alright”都是描述相当好的或可以接受的事物。
We use them in the same way we use the expression "okay".
我们使用它们的方式与我们使用表达“okay”的方式相同。
Let us begin with the two-word adjective, "all right".
让我们从由两个单词组成的形容词“all right”开始。
In this example, you can see that "all right" means something is not outstanding or special:
在这个例子中,你可以看出,“all right”是指某事物不突出或不特别:
That writer's first book was great but her second one was just all right.
那个作家的第一本书很棒,但她的第二本书就一般般了。
We also use "all right" to talk about someone's health.
我们也用“all right”来谈论某人的健康状况。
It means a person is healthy or not sick.
它是指一个人健康或者没有生病。
I asked Mom if she was feeling better and she said she was all right.
我问妈妈是否感觉好些了,她说没事了。
You may hear "all right" used as an adverb along with verbs like "seem".
你可能会听到“all right”被用作副词,和像“seem”这样的动词一起使用。
The milk is a week old, but it seems all right, because it doesn't smell bad.
这牛奶已经放了一个星期了,但它看起来没什么问题,因为它没有难闻的味道。
You will often hear "all right" at the beginning or end of a statement:
你经常会在一个句子的开头或结尾听到“all right”:
Let him know I stopped by, all right?
让他知道我来过,好吗?
So, you're free tonight?
所以,你今晚有空?
All right, let's go to the movies.
好的,我们去看电影吧。
Now, let us consider the single word, "alright".
现在,让我们探讨单独的一个单词,“alright”。
Here is where you can see language change happening in real time.
在这里你可以看到实时发生的语言变化。
You can use it in the same ways we talked about here with "all right" as two words.
我们在这里谈到了作为两个单词使用的“all right”的用法,你可以用相同的方式来使用“alright”。
In writing, it gives a more informal feeling.
以书面形式使用时,它给人一种非正式的感觉。
Language experts say that this written form is appearing more frequently these days
语言专家表示,这种书面形式最近出现得越来越频繁,
and may be based on the idea that the expression is similar to the adverbs "already" and "altogether".
而且那可能是基于这一想法,即这种表达类似于副词“already”和“altogether”。
When you want to make someone feel better, you might say,
当你想让某人感觉更好时,你可能会说,
Everything is going to be alright.
一切都会好起来的。
You may also have heard this expression as two words repeated many times in popular songs and in movies.
你可能也在流行歌曲和电影中多次听到过这个作为两个单词出现的短语。
Here is the song Hey Ya by Outkast:
下面是流浪者合唱团的《嘿丫》:
I say what's, what's cooler than being cool? (Ice Cold!)
我说,有什么比酷更酷呢?(冷酷!)
All right, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right
好吧,好吧,好吧,好吧,好吧,好吧,好吧,好吧
All right, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right
好吧,好吧,好吧,好吧,好吧,好吧
Okay now, ladies (Yeah?)
好吧,女士们(嗯?)
However, you should know that some English speakers consider alright (one word) to be a mistake.
然而,你应该知道,一些说英语的人认为alright(单独一个单词)是一个用词上的错误。
